BHS grapplers best Crusaders

SAMMAMISH - It was an evening of solid athletic performances as the Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team systematically took nearly every weight class in their away match against Eastside Catholic Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The final score was 50-18, Bainbridge.

The Crusaders managed a victory in only one round that was not by forfeit, with BHS claiming wins in nine of the 14 matches.

Double forfeits started the match in both the 106- and 113-pound classes.

Greg Williams claimed a win by forfeit in the 120-pound class, as did Jonathan Gallivan in the 126-pound class.

Chaney Weaver pinned Joseph Winkler in 5:32 for a victory in the 132-pound class.

It was in the 138-pound class where the Crusaders managed their big win of the night when Jack Miller was pinned by Matt Iwiki in 3:40.

After that, things quickly went south for Eastside.

Liam Topham pinned his opponent in 2:59 to claim the 145-pound class and Aaron Jumpa won an impressive 7-0 decision victory over Tanner Eggert in the 152-pound class.

BHS senior grappler Dylan Read won by forfeit in the 160-pound class.

Joaquin Gurza pinned his opponent in the 170-pound match in 3:05.

Bainbridge’s David Grytten scored another win by forfeit in the 182-pound class and senior Spartan heavyweight Mike Grant brought home a win in the 195-pound class with a technical fall and a score of 17-2.

Eastside claimed forfeit victories in the 220- and 285-pound classes.

The Spartans will wrestle in their next tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 at Washington High School.
