The Bainbridge High School football team hope to finish the regular season Friday night with a win over Bishop Blanchet at Memorial Stadium in order to place third in the Metro League’s Mountain Division and improve its seeding in the district playoffs, which begin next weekend.

The Spartans improved to 2-2 in league play and 4-3 overall last Saturday with a 34-22 victory over Lakeside. They trailed 22-21 entering the fourth quarter, but rallied on a 3-yard scoring run by Alex Johnson and a 65-yard touchdown scamper late in the game by Ross Cobb, who earlier had scored on runs of 12 and 44 yards. Steffan Dacquisto set up the final score with an interception.

The Spartans led 21-9 at halftime on Cobb’s two scores and a 13-yard touchdown run by Kyle Szarzynski. But Lakeside scored twice in the third quarter on a 25-yard pass from Peter Kimmey to Chris Pigott and a 3-yard run by Kimmey to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.

“They started picking us apart in the passing game,” coach Andy Grimm said. “We weren’t putting enough pressure on them, we were playing a zone, and they got going.”

But Lakeside couldn’t stop the Spartans’ running game, which produced 424 rushing yards. Cobb ran for 215 yards on 19 carries and Johnson gained 116 yards on 25 carries. Szarzynski ran for 50 yards on 9 carries.

Lakeside burned the Spartans for 245 passing yards, including 131 yards on 5 receptions by Pigott.

On the season, Cobb has 650 rushing yards on 69, while Johnson has 344 yards on the ground.

Bishop Blanchet is tied for third with Bainbridge in the Mountain Division.

Grimm said the Braves have a balanced offense, but the Spartans will have to slow down fullback Cameron Cutter to beat the visitors. Cutter has rushed for 760 yards this season on 148 carries.

The game takes place at Memorial Stadium and begins at 7 p.m.
