The Bainbridge Island Boys Gymnastics team nearly froze out the competition last weekend at the Cold Turkey Classic meet in Kent. The bounding, bouncing Bainbridge Boys gobbled up the competition as they swept both Level 4 and 5 team trophies in their season debut.
Teams competing from the region included Emerald City, Peak Gym, Rising Stars, Mount Baker, Metropolitan and Cascade Elite.
Level 4 (age division 7-8) first-timer Dashiell Gann of the Bainbridge team kicked off with an eighth-place finish for his age group in the pommel horse.
Teammate and returning veteran Tommy Goodhue got off to a great start with a third place in the high nar and on floor, and finished in fifth place overall.
The Level 4 (age division 9-10) athletes dazzled the crowd with a first-place finish in floor, pommel and high bar by Owen Scheer, plus a tie for first on parallel bars by newcomers Charlie Triesch and Jack Elkstrand. Aiden Cretarolo nailed first and Mace Korytko finished a solid sixth on the rings.
Owen Scheer and Charlie Triesch took first and second in the overall score, respectively, and snagged a team first-place victory.
Level 5 gymnasts from Bainbridge Island stood out as well. Returning crowd favorite Max Bispham swung to an impressive first-place finish on the parallel bars and ended the meet with an overall fourth place for the age 6-8 group. Veteran Leo Uyekawa came on strong with a first-place effort on the floor, a second in vault and an All Around finish of fourth place in the 9-10 age group.
The age 11 and up division podium was packed with Bainbridge athletes.
Kiernan Liberman snatched first for the high bar with a notable score of 11.7. Abe Muldrow took first in vault, pommel and floor, and Colin Hansen performed strongly with a second place in both the parallel bars and the high bar.
Liberman, Muldrow and Hansen captured first, second and third place overall and brought home the team Level 5 trophy.
The Cold Turkey proved an exciting launch into the season of competition for Bainbridge Island Gymnastics.
The team returns to action on island home turf at the Bainbridge Island Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 18 (boys) and Sunday, Jan. 19 (girls) at Commodore Gym.
