Bainbridge defense shuts down CK

Bainbridge’s defense held visiting Central Kitsap scoreless for about eight minutes last Friday night on the way to a 59-35 victory.

The Spartans boys basketball team led just 17-12 early in the second period, but then went on a 26-1 run to go ahead 46-13 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Senior James Carey started the streak with a tip-in, then senior Breno Oguri grabbed an offensive rebound and scored.

After a CK free throw, senior Henry Carsten knocked down a 3. Senior Everett Moore hit a 3 and Carsten hit another 3 to make it 35-13 at halftime.

The domination didn’t end there as senior Cliff Hennessey took over in the first half of the third quarter.

He hit a 3, then drove the baseline and made a nice step-around move for a basket.

After Moore was fouled on a 3-point shot and made all three free throws, Hennessey scored inside then hit a free throw to give the home team the 33-point lead.

The Warriors outscored the Spartans 22-13 the rest of the way to make the score respectable.

Statistics for the game were not emailed into The Review by deadline.

In their first game, the BHS boys just got by Newport of Bellevue 57-54.

The Bainbridge girls clobbered Mount Tahoma 49-29, but lost to Central Kitsap 48-39.

NK visits

North Kitsap and Bainbridge Island’s boys basketball team face off in an early-season battle Friday at 7 p.m. in BI.

BHS plays at Kingston next Tuesday at 7:30, while NK hosts Sequim at 7 p.m that same day.

In girls action, Bainbridge plays at NK Friday at 7:30. Kingston plays at BI next Tuesday at 7.

North Kitsap’s top-ranked 2A boys basketball team is off and running so far this year.

The Vikings won their opening game in a romp, whipping Crosspoint of Bremerton last week 93-57.

They then trounced Sumner over the weekend 72-57.

The girls team has been just as dominating, if not more so.

They beat up on Washington 78-27 in their season opener.

Then they humiliated Foss 66-8.

The Kingston boys had two close games against Crosspoint, barely getting by them 55-54. Later in the week they played the same team, but the result was about the same, winning 55-51.

The Buccaneer girls had no problem against East Jefferson, winning 78-27.

VB all stars

Also, four locals made the All-State Volleyball team and competed last Sunday at Burlington-Edison.

Elle Fultz of North Kitsap played in the 2A game, while in the 3A game, three players from Bainbridge competed: Florencia Olivera, Allie Wildsmith and Isabelle Prentice.

Team defense for Bainbridge was the key in the win over Central Kitsap, as the Spartans held the visitors scoreless for most of the second period and the start of the third.
