And for the Bainbridge Pee Wee youth football program, a one-for-three day will have to be seen in that same light as well.The Bainbridge B Gold squad salvaged an otherwise sober day for the island’s three teams during Saturday’s Kitsap County championship contests in sparkling style, staving off unbeaten Chico to take the title, 18-16.You guys beat the unbeatable, co-coach Todd Miller told his troops as they celebrated moments after the game’s end. Enjoy this – you’ll never know when you’ll get another chance.Another chance, however, is precisely what’s being sought by Bainbridge’s C and D teams, after 46-8 and 14-8 losses, successively, to North Kitsap and North Perry earlier in the day.Today, they were a better team, Bainbridge C coach Bryan Gilbreath told his shellshocked players after being stuck in improbably lopsided fashion for their only loss. Next year, I expect you guys out there and we’ll do this all over again.Bainbridge D coach Mark Sutton echoed those same sentiments in his postgame talk.Today, they got the breaks and you didn’t – use it to motivate yourselves for next year, he said. You guys gave 100 percent out there, so you’re all champions.That last is only literally true of the B team, which set out to avenge the only blemish on its record this season – a 20-0 loss to Chico last month.The team certainly started the game on the right foot, as Willy Delius took Chico’s opening kickoff 62 yards for a touchdown.Delius and Kris Patterson combined to make stops on two Chico drives in the second quarterback – the former by way of a pass interception – before the two hooked up again offensively.With 56 seconds remaining in the half, quarterback Delius hit Patterson with a short pass that the shifty runner turned into a tackle-breaking sprint across the goal line for a 12-0 lead. Patterson, who ran 21 times for 126 yards on the afternoon, capped Bainbridge’s scoring in the third period with a 31-yard explosion.Chico suddenly found its offense late in the final period, however, burning the blue-and-gold on two deep pass plays for touchdowns to draw within two.Time ran short, however, and a third Chico drive that might have helped give the opponent a go-ahead score was thwarted on a leaping pass interception by Brenden Gent.It was a total team effort, as deep safety Pat Layton added an interception and Zach Smith made numerous contributions with his running, receiving and defense.By contrast, the D team – in a virtual repeat of its championship drive from the previous year – looked as though it might pull off a comeback win.North Perry grabbed an early lead, taking advantage of a bogged-down Bainbridge running attack. The blue-and-gold contingent made up for that with a hawkish defensive, capped by Joseph Haley’s 68-yard return of a pass interception for what proved to be Bainbridge’s lone touchdown. Paul Varner, who led Bainbridge with 39 yards on 11 ball carries, made the two-point conversion kick for a short-lived tie. North Perry scored, however, on its very next drive.Good defense, keyed by timely hits from Marc Kauffman, Harry Evans, Matthew Ritualo and Kyle Szarzynski, kept Bainbridge in it till the end – when, just like the previous year, a last drive toward the end zone came up just short.The C squad had by far the roughest day, getting burned by a quick-snap offense from North Kitsap that saw a 52-yard burst for a score on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back. NK’s Bubby Ditmer scored four times and piled up nearly 260 yards rushing.Bainbridge’s handful of highlights included its lone score – a 58-yard fourth-quarter burst by Austin Hurt – a fumble recovery by Benjamin McCarty, and strong runs by Dayton Gilbreath. “
