2 Spartan wrestlers show well at state

Bainbridge

Junior Wyatt Goade of Bainbridge won his first match at state, pinning Collin Vanwyk in 1 minute, 26 seconds at 220 pounds. Goade improved his season record to 18-11, while his foe from Juanita dropped to 22-7. But then Goade lost by pin in the second round to Sandor Buday of Silah in 2:27. Buday improved to 23-7.

For the BHS girls, senior Aubrie Ackland received byes for two rounds then faced Monica Kaiser of South Kitsap. The Spartan took a 2-0 lead on a takedown, then was awarded a point for an illegal hold. An escape made it 4-0, and then she had another takedown to make it 6-0. But the tide turned with a quick reversal and pin at the 3:33 mark. Ackland ended the season 20-7.

North Kitsap

North Kitsap junior Sofian Hammou won the state 2A wrestling title at 220 pounds at the Tacoma Dome Saturday, while freshman Zakaria Hammou placed second.

Sofian won the title match with a pin with just six seconds left at 5 minutes 54 seconds. Bryson Lamb of Squalicum was second. To get to the finale, he pinned Josue Solorio of Othello in 4:40. On Friday, he pinned his first round opponent in just 55 seconds and in the quarterfinal he won by another pin in 2:55.

Zakaria lost to Lars Michaelson of Bremerton in the championship match by technical fall, trailing 25-10 with 5:10 left in the match. He advanced to the final with a 6-3 decision over Ryan Mackiewicz of Shelton. He won his first match Friday by pin in 5:24 and his second with a 6-0 decision in the quarterfinals.

Benjamin Gomez was the only other local to place, finishing seventh for NK. Coming up through the consolation bracket, he lost 6-2 before winning by pin in 3:24, by a decision 7-4 and by a 3-2 decision before being pinned in his final match in 1:58.

On Friday, at 125 pounds, Viking Makayla Heymann, a junior, won two matches. Her first was by technical fall, having a 17-0 lead at the 5:15 mark of the third round. She then won her next by pin in 4:35. But with a quarterfinal match on the line, she lost by pin in 4:35.

Jesus Mares at 285 pounds won his first match 3-1. Mares lost a heart-breaker in the next round 1-0. He then was sent to the consolation bracket and was pinned at the end of the second round.

At 113 pounds, freshman Wyatt Trogeden won by pin in his first match in just 54 seconds. But Trogeden was disqualified in his next match. Moved to the consolation bracket, he lost a 7-2 decision.

Kingston

At 285 pounds, sophomore Gavin Garner wrestled Treavor Atkins tough for two rounds. He started with a 4-0 deficit after two takedowns, but a reversal cut the lead in half to 4-2 until Atkins added an escape. The Buc was pinned in the third round at the 4:39 mark. Sent to the consolation bracket, he was pinned at the end of the second period.

Jefferson Hernandez, a junior, lost his first match 9-1 at 182 pounds, then was pinned in his consolation match in 49 seconds.
