William S. Hart, Jr.

William S. Hart, Jr. age 81, of Bainbridge Island, died May 13 at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. 

He was born Sept. 6, 1922 in Santa Monica, Calif., to William S. Hart, Sr. and Winifred Westover Hart, both silent film actors.

He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1939 at age 17, and later earned a master’s degree in environmental planning. During World War II, he was a cryptographer and member of the Office of Strategic Services. 

After many years struggling to secure his father’s ranch in Newhall, he turned to real estate development and appraisal. He taught appraisal, business and finance for some 40 years at various places including UCLA, USC and Santa Monica Community College. 

He retired in 1989 and relocated to Bainbridge Island with his wife and children. He enjoyed reading and playing classical guitar.

He is survived by his wife Rosalind Hart; daughters Vanessa, Karina and Christina; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 26 at Port Madison Lutheran Church, with a ceremony at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Westwood, Calif., on June 12.
