Ruth Lord

Ruth Kimball Lord, of Silverdale, died on Jan. 18 at Clearbrook Inn in Silverdale. She was 94.

She was born on July 27, 1914 in Mapleville, R.I. to Jefferson B. Kimball and Florence Nightingale Heap. Her father worked as a designer in woolen mills throughout New England.

Young Ruth and her three sisters Barbara, Elizabeth and Jean were known for their musical gifts, performing for local church and community groups. Ruth had a lifelong love of the violin and was an accomplished violinist, playing with the University of Maine Orchestra and the orchestra of Belmont, Mass. Many an evening was spent playing string quartets with her friends. During her later years, she enjoyed attending Bainbridge Chorale and Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra concerts.

A 1936 graduate of the University of Maine, Ruth taught public school before her marriage to Francis Jordan Lord in September 1938. The family settled in Belmont and Oak Bluffs, Mass., with Frank serving for three decades as an executive with the Polaroid Corporation.

Ruth loved gardening, painting, summers on Martha’s Vineyard and visiting with her friends. She had a way of making each person around her feel like the most important person in the world. She moved to Country Meadows and then Clearbrook Inn in 2000 to be closer to her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Lord; her son, Geoffrey Peter Lord; and her sisters, Elizabeth Langlois and Barbara Larlee.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Lord Harrison of Bainbridge Island and Linda Lord Schmidt of Troy, Ohio and their husbands, David and Miles; grandsons Ian and Charles Schmidt and Benjamin and Jordan Harrison; great-granddaughter Amaya Maye Delain Schmidt; sister Jean Larsen of Freedom, Maine; and her devoted friend, Janine Krogh.
