Roda Irene Hallman Brown

Roda Irene Hallman Brown, 93, died Nov. 18 in Calgary, Alberta.

She was born Jan. 2, 1909 in Kitsap County to August and Eva (Morgan) Hallman.

After graduating from Union High School in Poulsbo in 1926, she attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Schools in St. Paul, Minn. and Nyack, N.Y.

She worked as a missionary for 32 years, first sailing for South Africa via Portugal in 1944, at the height of World War II. Her missionary work included Zulu language study at Maqut Mission Station, teaching Sunday school in the Johannesburg area and serving as matron at a boarding school at Florence. She married George Henry Brown on Jan. 13, 1949 in Swaziland, South Africa.

They served at Mosvold Mission Hospital, where their daughters were born. After completion of the hospital compound, they moved to Vryheid to be house parents at the Mission Children’s home where their daughters lived during the school year.

The couple retired in 1976 to Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carol Sommerville of Calgary and Ruth Loubser (Henfred) Waterkloof of Pretoria, South Africa; sister Doris Mattson and sister-in-law Jean Hallman Lichti, both of Bainbridge Island; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; three brothers, Ralph, William and Theodore Hallman; and two sisters, Calla Brickley and Goldie Hagbo.

Services were held Nov. 25 in Kelnowna, British Columbia. Interment was at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.
