Rita Pearl Sandum

Rita P. Sandum, age 81, died Feb. 25 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island. 

She was born June 12, 1923 in Leominster, Mass., to Joseph and Rose (Pepin) Proteau.

She married George Duval in Fitchburg, Mass., on Nov. 20, 1945, and they were married for 24 years.  They lived in Fitchburg until moving to Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1959.

She moved to Port Angeles in 1965. She later married Raymond Sandum, who preceded her in death in 1999 after 29 years.

She was a resident of Kitsap County for the past 15 years. She was an independent woman who worked hard to support her family.  In retirement, she enjoyed playing cards and bingo.

She is survived by daughters Jeanne Espinosa of Santa Clarita, Calif., Irene Harrison and Marie Eikum and son Thomas Duval, all of Port Angeles; and five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Heidi Harrison Thornton, in 1998. 

At her request no services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
