Patricia A. Loken of Bainbridge Island died Monday evening, June 14, of a pancreatic cancer which had been diagnosed the previous Friday. Patricia was the widow of Howard G. Loken who died in 1985, and the daughter of long time Bainbridge residents, Irving Stewart and Fannie McArdle Miller.

Patricia was born June 8, 1918 in Lakeview, OR, and was raised and educated in Seattle, WA. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1939 with a B.A. in Sociology. Patricia and Howard were married in 1940. During WW II she worked at the American Red Cross and later was secretary to the Dean of Architecture at UW. Throughout her life, Patricia had been devoted to books and writing. In her earlier years she sold several stories and feature articles and more recently had written serious poetry and met with a group of other Bainbridge poets.

She enjoyed sailing, mountain activities, walking, travel – both foreign and in the States – and accompanying Howard on numerous golf courses. She loved her family, friends and Bainbridge Island.

Patricia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Gary Axling, of Bainbridge Island; her son and daughter-in-law, Martin Loken and Marjiann Moss of Nordland, WA; a sister, Joyce Miller Nelson and brother-in-law, W. Dale Nelson, of Laramie, WY; five grandchildren: Matt Axling and his wife, Heather Wight Axling of Seattle; Chris Axling and his wife, Sarah, of Port Townsend, WA; Darren Loken of Sammamish, WA; Debbie Escobar-Loken, of Sammamish: and Jennifer Gustafson of Port Angeles. She also is survived by seven great-grandchildren and two nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, the Bainbridge Library, the Eagle Harbor Church on Bainbridge, or a charity of the donor’s choice. A Celebration of Patricia’s life will be held in July at the Bainbridge home of Laurie and Gary Axling.
