On July 5, 2023 Dr. Michael “Mike” Hurley Cable, passed away peacefully surrounded by his two sons and theirfamilies.
The second of three boys born to Arlonzo and Zelah Cable, Mike grew up in Billings, MT. A “Montana mountain man” at heart, Mike’s childhood was fueled by dreams of the wild-west, adventure, and horses. He held onto his love for adventure and the big sky wilderness throughout his life. Mike graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1960.
Michael married his “beautiful bride” Marie Elizabeth Ferro in 1964. Shortly after marriage, they moved to Colorado where Michael completed his Doctor in Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State in 1969. The happy lovebirds moved to California in 1970 and started a family adding two boys, Sean and Troy. In 1975 Mike and Marie moved to Bainbridge Island, WA where Dr. Cable opened his first practice, Island Veterinary Clinic. In 1985 he sold this practice and started Big Valley Equine Services, a large animal only practice. It was here that he adopted a groundbreaking holistic approach to veterinarian services and was the first to offer large animal acupuncture in Washington State. In 1995, Dr. Cable founded Big Valley Vet Services and Big Valley Pet Resort and retired in 2015. For 40 years Dr. Cable cared for animals all across Bainbridge Island, Kitsap County, and the Olympic Peninsula. His skills, quick wit, and unique sense of humor turned many clients into lifelong friends.
Mike was known for his unbridled generosity and sarcastically concealed deep love for friends.
He will be fondly remembered as a devoted and loving husband, incredible father, Pops, horse whisperer, soccer coach, and a slightly unfocused hobbyist with a love for adventure.
Mike is survived by his two sons, Sean (Keri), Troy (Heather), two grandsons Alek and Devin, granddaughter Alexandria, Thomas Cable (older brother) and his loyal chocolate lab Winchester.
There will be a Celebration of Life from 4-7 at Port Gamble Pavilion on Monday September 18th. Please join us in celebrating Dr. Michael Cable. As an ardent supporter of Wounded Warriors and Center Valley Animal Rescue (Quilcene, WA), in lieu of flowers please consider donating.
