Merle Rye

April 6, 1933 – April 4, 2015

Merle was born on April 6, 1933 in Howard, South Dakota.

Merle loved the water. As a young boy, he rowed around Bainbridge Island in a little skiff with his dog Rocky. The love of the water and country led Merle into the Navy. He served valiantly during the Korean War. His shipmates described him as one of the most reliable and hardworking sailors on the USS Leonard Mason—a ship that Merle loved very much.

After being discharged in 1955, Merle met Leona Alexanderson while she was eating lunch at the Terrace restaurant in Winslow. Merle introduced himself to Leona and a love affair blossomed. Melody was born on January 25, 1958 joining her brother Russell.

Merle and family lived in Eagledale for nearly 40 years. Merle loved that part of the Island as he enjoyed driving the winding and quiet roads.

Merle belonged to a long list of organizations including the Masons, Eagles, Rotary, Moose, VFW, American Legion, Sportsman’s club and Son’s of Norway.

Merle left behind his wife of 59 years, Leona, his daughter Melody ( David ) Swanson, his son Russell Rye and his 3 grandchildren Craig ( Lexi ), Brian ( Julie ) and Brittany Swanson as well as his great-granddaughter Sophia Swanson. He is also survived by his 3 remaining sisters, Darlene, Shirley and Sharon.
