Mary Swendsen Shryock passed away on May 5, 2023 at age 91 on Bainbridge Island. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, Nana and friend. She was known for her kindness and generosity. She is deeply missed by those who loved and knew her.

Mary was born on September 19, 1931 to Harold and Beatrice Swendsen in Seattle, Washington. The Swendsen family later moved to Bainbridge Island where Mary grew up playing on the beach at Point White.

She attended Whitman College where she was a member of Alpha Phi and served as President. She graduated with her BA in Economics and Business Administration in 1953. Later in her life she enjoyed her work at the Bank of California and Diehl Engineering.

Upon retiring she loved gardening, reading and watching the Mariners and Seahawks. Mary was also well known for her famous Christmas cookies she baked every year!

Mary lives on in the best parts of her family. She is survived by her three daughters. Bis Halady, Katie Greiner and Nancy (Charlie) Holt as well as her seven grandchildren: Allison (Matt), Kaitlin (Andrew), Alexandra, Kirk, Cole, Sarah, and Emily and 2 great grandchildren.

Even though she is gone, Mary’s loving heart left a beacon of light for all who loved and knew her.
