Published September 1, 2009

Marie L. Parfitt Hinrichs, of Anacortes, died on Sept. 1 at home. She was 80.

She was born on July 8, 1929 in Seattle to Herbert and Blanche (Cummings) Johnson and was raised on Bainbridge Island, where she met her first husband, Gregg Parfitt, part of one of Bainbridge Island’s pioneer families. After World War II, the couple married, began their family and started the first drive-in restaurant in Poulsbo. They then went north to Alaska, where they homesteaded in Tenekee Spring. Gregg worked in logging and was later killed in a bush plane accident in 1963.

Marie moved to Juneau with her three children, Gregory, Pam, and Rod. While there, she became active in Alcoholics Anonymous and worked for the State of Alaska in substance abuse counseling. To further her education in that area, she moved to Wilmar, Minn., where she became the state coordinator for substance abuse. There, she met her second husband, building contractor Paul Hinrichs. They built a beautiful home on a lake in Spicer, Minn., were both active in AA and enjoyed fishing and traveling in their motor home.

Marie and Paul retired to Bull Shoals, Ark., where they spent time fishing, traveling and being active in AA fellowship. After Paul’s death in 2002, Marie moved to Anacortes to be near the ocean and her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Gregg Parfitt and Paul Hinrichs; and her brother, William Johnson.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Greg and Joyce Parfitt and Rod Parfitt; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Howard Bean of Anacortes; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes, with a reception to follow. Memorials may be made to Skagit Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1376, Mt. Vernon, WA 98273. An online guest register is at www.evanschapel.com.
