Jonathan Manheim

Published September 28, 2014

Jonathan Allen Manheim was born on Sept. 28, 1950, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Jack and Selma Manheim. He grew up in and around that area and lived for several years in New York.

He graduated from Summit High School and went on to NYU for several years to study film making. He moved to San Francisco in 1971, where he became a photographer and sold his pictures as a street artist. He decided to return to college and finish his degree at UC Berkeley in molecular biology in 1979.

He met his wife, Leigh, in Berkeley and they married in 1982. Garth was born in 1984, Meghan in 1986, and Alana in 1988. He always said the happiest days of his life were the days his children were born.

In 1987, the family moved to Redmond, where he began working for Microsoft and stayed for 10 years.

The most fulfilling years of his life came after he retired in 1997 and moved to Bainbridge Island, where he got to spend his days at the beach with his family, travel the world, and build an amazing community of friends.

He passed away at home Sept. 9, 2014 surrounded by his girls, Leigh, Meghan, and Alana.

He was preceded in death by his son Garth and by his parents, Selma and Jack Manheim.

There will be a celebration of his life at the Manor House on Bainbridge Island from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 (his 64th birthday). All are welcome; come and share some stories and remembrances with us.
