John Nelson Pomeroy

John Nelson Pomeroy died at home in Idaho on Jan. 15. He was 93.

He was born May 27, 1916, in Grants Pass, Ore.

Nelson married his childhood sweetheart Betsy and raised four children Ann, Jane, Charlie and Tom.

Nelson worked on the construction of Pearl Harbor and survived the Dec. 7 attack. He served in the Merchant Marines.

As director of J.H. Pomeroy & Co., he worked on the Golden Gate Bridge, Lake Washington’s floating bridge and the Smith Tower in Seattle.

He moved to Bainbridge Island in 1963 and then to Crystal Mountain in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Betsy.

Nelson is survived by his children Ann Scales, Charlie Pomeroy (Jude), and Tom Pomeroy and Jane Pomeroy; grandchildren Nate Scales (Lisa), Laura Raffetto (Mike), and Jordan Hawkes; great-grandchildren Ripley, Daisy and Annie; and his lab Alice.

An opportunity to have “a nip” in Nelson’s honor will be Feb. 12, at his home in Chocolate Gulch, Ida. Remembrances in his name can be made to Hospice of the Wood River Valley or the Idaho Conservation League.
