John Hura

July 13th, 1945 - June7, 2021

John David Hura was the first born child to John Hura and Helen McDonald Hura. He was born in Seattle on July 13, 1945 and died in Tacoma on June 7, 2021. He grew up on Bainbridge Island where his family lived in Creosote and Eagledale. He attended island schools and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1963. Following graduation, he joined the Navy and served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. After his discharge in 1967, he graduated from Olympic College and Western Washington University. He also got a degree from Green River College in Wastewater Technology. He went to work for Midway Sewer District, where he was the head chemist for the duration of his career. He was recognized by the State of Washington for his outstanding service.

He lived between Auburn and Black Diamond until his health required him to move to a assisted living facility in 2017. His hobbies were metal detecting and listening to and watching old time radio and television. He was an involved member of his church for many years. He collected vintage radios. He was a longtime member of the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was a 45 year member of the American Legion on Bainbridge Island.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Helen Hura; his grandparents, Clyde and Rose McDonald; and his favorite uncle Chuck, who was like a brother to him. He is survived by his siblings: Kathy Clark (Jim) of Enumclaw, Pat Horton (Russ) of Mt. Vernon, Larry (Teresa) of Haines, AK, and Susie Mathews (Steve) of Belfair. He is also survived by five nephews and three nieces as well as six great nieces and nephews.

Commitment services, with military honors, will be July 26, 2021 at 11:30am, at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. Remembrances in Johnny’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family would especially like to thank Kathy for the dedicated care she gave to Johnny during his final years. She went to great lengths to make sure he was well taken care of.
