Jocelyn C. Horder

Jocelyn Clise Horder

August 4, 1923 – November 18, 2011

Jocelyn Clise Horder, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 18, at her home in Poulsbo, Washington, with her family and her beloved dog Rosie, by her side.

A third generation Seattleite, she was born August 4, 1923, to Charles and Rosalind Clise. She attended Bush School and in 1944 graduated from the University of Washington School of Art where she received the Lambda Rho Art Honorary. She later studied print making under Amelio Amero at Cornish School of Art. Her wood engravings were exhibited in many NW art shows, the Library of Congress and the Pennsylvania Art Academy. During WWII she worked as a draftsman for Colby Steel and volunteered as a nurse’s aide at Swedish Hospital.

She met her husband, Garrett Provine Horder, while racing sailboats on Lake Washington. They married in Seattle in 1949 and spent their honeymoon sailing together. With their four children, they cruised throughout the Northwest, Alaska, the Queen Charlotte Islands, Tahiti, Maine, Chesapeake Bay, the Caribbean and Scotland. She was a member of the Seattle Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of America.

An avid mountain climber, Jocelyn summited Mt. Rainier, Mt. Shuksan, Mt. Olympus and Mt. Hood. She also loved hiking, crossing the High Divide in the Olympic Mountains and leading many of her Girl Scout troops exploring deep into the Olympics and Cascades.

She had a lifelong passion for plants and developed an award winning garden which is included in the Smithsonian Archive of American Gardens and many publications. More than 4,000 visitors have toured her garden. She served as a Horticultural Judge for the Garden Club of America for five years. She created an extensive collection of bonsai. For twelve years she was curator of fern spore for the American Fern Society and Hardy Fern Foundation, exchanging spore with fern enthusiasts around the world. She was a member of numerous northwest garden clubs. She and her sister, Sylvia, spent many happy hours exploring, botanizing and arguing over the scientific names of plants.

Jocelyn lived each day with vibrance, joy and a twinkle in her eye. She was generous and unassuming. A voracious reader, she had a keen intellect and an endless curiosity. Her knowledge, love and understanding of the natural world was an inspiration to those around her. Throughout her life she strove to protect the world she loved.

She served on the boards of the Totem Girl Scout Council, the Northwest Horticultural Society, the Washington Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, the Hardy Fern Foundation and the Mountain Cabin Memorial Society, dedicated to servicemen killed in World War II.

She is survived by her four children, Rosalind Williams (Ron) of Kingston, Morley Horder (Colleen) of Bainbridge Island, Bill Horder of Seattle, and Constance Horder (John Lyndes) of Canyon Creek, Montana, her four grandchildren, Garrett Kephart (Amy), Anna, Sarah and Catherine Horder, and her sister, Sylvia Clise Duryee of Seattle. Her caregiver, Carolyn Chase, loved and cared for her in her last years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, and her brothers, Alfred and Charles.

She was greatly loved. Her kind ways and gentle spirit touched many people. She will be remembered and held close in the hearts of those she knew and loved.

There will be a private service. Donations may be made to the Hardy Fern Foundation, Children’s Hospital, Hospice of Kitsap County or a favorite charity.
