Florentino Tabafunda

December 2, 1945 – November 20, 2010

      Florentino “Sonny” Tabafunda passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2010 in a car accident in Suquamish, WA. He was born on December 2, 1945 and was 64 years of age.

      Sonny was a long time resident of Bainbridge Island. Sonny graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1964 and continued to Broadway, Community College in Seattle, then on to Olympic Community College in Bremerton. He worked summers in Alaska from 1961-1964 at various canneries. He then worked at Seattle Lockheed ship building from 1964-1967, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1967-1993 where he retired. He then did five years of care giving for his sister and worked part-time janitorial at Mastercraft lighting on Bainbridge Island. His final job was being the custodian at Bainbridge High School for six years.

      He coached little league, girls baseball, Pee Wee football and played baseball. His hobbies were riding his Harley, scuba diving, fishing, doing mechanical work on family vehicles and camping at the family fish camp in Yale B.C. Sonny was very spiritual, being a Eucharitisic server at St. Cecilia church and spiritual cultural participator at native gatherings.

      He is survived by his wife Judith Ann Tabafunda, daughter Madalena Maria Wilson (Ken), son, Alfonso Shawn Tabafunda, grandson Tyler Wilson, siblings; Paul Randall (Randy) Tabafunda (Gloria), Eugene Antonio Tabafunda (Tracy), Patricia Flores, Carmen Voorhees, Bernice Williams (Napa), Marcelina Tabafunda (Donald Wing), Elina Tageant (Dean Williams), Barbara June Scheaffer (Joe) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Paul D. Tabafunda, mother Virginia Andrews Tabafunda, grandparents; Mercedies and Rosa Tabafunda and George and Agnus Andrews, brother Domingo Tabafunda, nephews Antonio Paul Abrahamson, William Joseph Tabafunda and his niece Sarita Flores.

      Family and friends attended the visitation on Monday, November 29, 2010 at the Filipino American Community Hall on Bainbridge Island followed by the Recitation of the Rosary. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island. Interment followed at Seabold Cemetery on Bainbridge. A reception took place at the The Suquamish Community House in Suquamish.
