Evelyn Meta Taber Peratrovich of 9762 Manitou Place NE, Bainbridge Island was born in Moscow, Idaho on November 5, 1920 and died April 13, 2019 in Poulsbo, Washington. Evelyn was the daughter of Glenn Earnest and Frieda M. (Meyer) Taber, both deceased. She was the wife of Stanley Peratrovich from Klawock, Alaska (m. 1947) and was deceased in 2002. Evelyn adopted a daughter, Pamela Peratrovich (b.1950) who also is deceased (d.1968). Evelyn had two brothers, Robert Taber died as a young boy, and James Taber (d.2009). She is survived by nieces and nephews: Virginia Gilbert of Port Orchard, WA; Judy Shock of Garden City, Idaho; Beverly Hilliard of Nampa, Idaho; Tahania Peratrovich of Ellensburg, WA; Peter Galaktinoff of Olympia, WA and many other Peratrovich family members. Evelyn has had much support from friends over her many years from Bainbridge Island Visually Impaired Persons community group, Bainbridge Island Bethany Lutheran Church, nursing colleagues, friends from Berkeley and Bay Area in California and many more from her life encounters in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska, and California.

Evelyn’s education includes high school in Colfax, Washington, Pre-nursing at Washington State College, Pullman, WA, and the 3-yr Nursing Program at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. As a Registered Nurse, Evelyn served in WWII in the Army Nurse Corps and was discharged as a 1st Lt. She met Stanley at the Veteran’s Hospital in Walla Walla, WA when she was employed and he was hospitalized. Evelyn worked in hospitals, Lutheran Welfare Service, home care for sick and dying family members, nursing roles at the Nutritional Science Program with the University of California at Berkeley who was researching the nutritional requirements for space travel for US Space Program, and finally LTC facilities on Bainbridge Island. She finished her career with Gerontological Specialist.

Evelyn was very active in her church in all the places that she lived. She served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Financial Secretary for her church, President of ULCW for the Pacific SE Synod, and many other leadership positions. She also served her community in areas of need, such as a leader in the BI VIP group for which she was still active in participation up until her death. Evelyn had a love for music and theatre and attended Bainbridge Island Symphony and Bainbridge Performing Arts. She had her front row seats for all the performances that she could attend. She loved her garden and always wanted beauty around her even though in the last month of her life she needed help with planting and watering. She leaves a legacy of caring and concern for others and a love of life. Many will miss her advice, her smile and laughter, and her quest for knowledge and more spiritual insight.
