Doris Orr Selfors

March 14, 1935 – October 11, 2010

Doris was born in Cripple Creek, CO to William and Vivian Orr on March 14, 1935 and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her four sons and daughters-in-law on October 11, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

Doris moved with her family from Leadville, Colorado to Port Madison, Bainbridge Island in 1941 when her father went to work in the Bainbridge Shipyards. Doris attended Lincoln Elementary in the town of Winslow and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1953 where she played the saxophone in the marching band, was a cheerleader and was homecoming queen of her senior class.

Doris married Jack D. Selfors in 1953 and moved with him to Tacoma where he was a school teacher for the Tacoma School District. Doris and Jack moved the family to Gig Harbor bay in 1971 where she continued to raise her sons. Doris spent many summers in Westport helping run the family charter fishing boat the “Sirod”. After her divorce she went to work with the local phone company, CenturyTel, and retired after 17 years in customer service.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, William and Vivian Orr, brother Bill Orr, sister Barbara Zinn, and brother Jerry Orr.

Doris is survived by her fours sons, Rick (Debbie) Selfors, James (Linda) Selfors, Jeff Selfors, John (Lisa) Selfors, her six grandchildren, Justin, Kyle, Henry and Madeleine Selfors, Amanda and Christian Doucett and one great granddaughter, Heidi Marie Selfors.

Doris loved watching her children and grandchildren perform or play in any event and could be heard cheering throughout the stadium.

Doris spent many years and hours volunteering for the Gig Harbor Fish Food Bank, the Peninsula Lutheran Church and was a founding member of the Peninsula Sports Booster Club. She was an accomplished quilter and seamstress and spent many hours volunteering her time sewing for the needy.

Doris had many wonderful friends whom she loved and visited with by phone daily. Her daily phone calls to her family just to say “I Love You” will be greatly missed.

Donations to the Gig Harbor Fish Food Bank in Doris’ memory is strongly suggested. A memorial service will be announced at a further date.
