Derrel “Tex” J. Payne passed away on Sept. 29, 2017 at his home on Bainbridge Island, surrounded by family.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1938 in Big Sandy, Texas.

Derrel proudly served in the U.S. Army and retired after 20 years. He worked for U-Park parking chain in Seattle, and Ace Hardware on Bainbridge Island.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling and gardening.

Derrel was preceded in death by his parents Alton and Lessie Payne; stepfather Robert Warner; brother Bill Payne; sister Louise Elpers; and grandparents Albert and Lela Caldwell.

Surviving him are his wife, Janet, of 58 years; daughter Bonnie (Peter) Eckart of Renton; daughter Sherri (Jim) Corbin of Silverdale; daughter Brenda (Tim) Cook of Suquamish; son Del (Mindi) Payne of Great Falls, Montana; and brother Kenneth (Sharon) Payne of Houston, Texas; as well as 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed.
