Danielle (Dee) Currey Challis Heald

November 1, 1919 – January 31, 2011

      Danielle (Dee) Currey Challis Heald, 91, recently of Bainbridge Island, passed on Monday, January 31st at Sunrise Haven in Kent, WA.

      Danielle was born in Olympia, WA on November 1, 1919 to Edmund and Irene Currey. She served in the WAVES during WWII and made lifelong friends during that time of service. After the war she lived for a time in Washington, DC and studied at American University and then she moved to New York, NY where she was employed at the United States Mission to the UN, first as a secretary working for Eleanor Roosevelt, and later as a special assistant to Amb. Henry Cabot Lodge. She enjoyed her years in Manhattan and in 1957 married George Challis of London, England at Riverside Church in New York. In later years she lived in New Canaan, CT, Olympia and later Bainbridge Island, WA.

      In 1994 she married Lt. Col. Edgar Heald and they enjoyed 14 wonderful years together. Everyone who knew her enjoyed her spunk and sense of fun. She became a Christian Scientist in her twenties and her study and practice of the religion was of profound and lifelong importance to her. Her last months were spent at Sunrise Haven in Kent.

      She is survived by her son Ian Challis and his partner, David Roos, her brother Douglas V. Currey, her sister Diane Stocking, nieces and nephews, and many loving friends.
