Bettyann L. (Slaughter) McMillan, 84, died March 19.
She was born Nov. 30, 1921, to Dr. James T. and Elsa Slaughter. Raised in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood, she attended West Queen Anne Grade School, Queen Anne High School and then Washington State University.
She was one of the first local women to enlist in the newly created Navy Waves in November 1942, serving until November 1945 as an air traffic controller.
In 1949 she married Edward R. McMillan. She raised two children, Kathleen and Randle, on Queen Anne Hill before moving to Bainbridge Island in 1960.
She was active in Christian Women’s Club, the PEO and Kappa Kappa Gamma.
She enjoyed creating gift cards, beachcombing, Brailling books for the blind, traveling and devoting herself to her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James A. Slaughter and sister Elizabeth Muncaster.
She is survived by her husband, Edward McMillan, of Poulsbo; daughter Kathleen Parker of Poulsbo; son Randle T. McMillan and daughter-in-law Christine of Seattle; grandchildren Allison Porter of North Carolina and Evan E. Parker of Indiana; and two great-grandsons, Clayton and John.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. April 8 at Liberty Bay Presbyterian Church in Poulsbo.
Memorial donations may be made to Martha & Mary Lutheran Services in Poulsbo, where she received care during her final days, or to Community Services for the Blind in Seattle.
