Andrew Macki

Andrew Macki

August 28, 1926 – March 2, 2011

Andrew Macki, aged 84, died the first week of March 2011, peacefully at home. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Elmer was born on August 28, 1926, only son of Andrew and Elizabeth Macki in West Seattle.

He joined the Merchant Marine in 1945, and always noted that in terms of percentage, more merchant marines lost their lives in the Second World War than in any of the other services. He was a merchant marine for more than 20-years, retiring with a full pension to his property on Bainbridge Island in 1967, in his early 40s. He built his own Pan-Abode cedar home, living in a trailer on the property until forced into the home by the December 1990 “artic express”, with 11-days of no power. He lived there alone until his death, although he had frequent visitors. For 40-years he monitored his local neighborhood, carrying news, cleaning ditches, and giving advice on neighbor projects, which he found far more interesting than his own.

He is survived by distant cousins in Maine and Finland. He is dearly missed by his adopted Seabold family, who will be holding a memorial service on his birthday, August 28, 2011.
