Peace and love at the Reserve

If you goof by neglecting to properly celebrate your honey tomorrow, Bloedel Reserve will offer a means toward redemption: a Valentine’s concert pairing flamenco guitarist Andre Feriante and jazz pianist Overton Berry.

Feriante, a classically trained guitarist, is known for an elegant style encompassing many cultural traditions, from flamenco to his own innovative compositions. Berry, a Northwest legend, has performed for more than 50 years in venues as varied as the Fireside Room at Seattle’s Sorrento Hotel to the Hong Kong Sheraton.

The performance is at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 15. Call 842-7631 for reservations.

Another stop on the island

Fresh off a tour with New Old Stock, Wes Corbett returns to the island with Joy Kills Sorrow, a “prodigiously tasteful pop-grass ensemble” based in his new stomping ground, Boston.

Their brand of folk music is innovative and beautiful, and you can catch it at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Island Music Guild.

A Zany Rainy forecast at KiDiMu

Fresh on the heels of Arthur and a grand opening weekend comes the Zany Rainy Forest, KiDiMu’s latest major exhibit, on view now along with the Lost City.

“View” is probably the wrong descriptor; geared toward ages 1-10, the forest is a custom-built, hands-on experience that promotes respect for cultural diversity and the conservation of rainforest flora and fauna. Throw in critical thinking, literacy-focused activity, imaginative play and visual arts, and you’ve got a whole-body, whole-mind experience for youngsters and their families. Be sure to check out the giant eagle’s nest, cozy reading huts, a puppet theater and a rope climbing bridge among other spaces.

Tuesday has also been earmarked “No School Day,” with a full day of scheduled activities including an arts and crafts workshop at 10:30 a.m. for ages 3 and up; a presentation at 11 a.m. by Bloedel Reserve’s Richard Brown of his own collection of butterflies and moths; and a science fair prep workshop by teacher Wendy Hufnugle at 1 p.m.
