Work on the Waypoint — Bainbridge Island’s new gateway park — is continuing at a fast clip, and workers on the project said Monday the welcoming attraction will be ready well in time for the Feb. 14 grand-opening celebration.

The groundbreaking for the Waypoint was in late September, and construction crews have been hard at work at the property since early November.

The new park, located on the site of a former gas station at the corner of Winslow Way and Olympic Drive, is expected to cost roughly $280,000. The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island has donated $80,000 for the project.

Much of the project is nearing completion. Approximately 70 percent of the landscaping plants have been installed, and the serpentine wall along the edge of the public promenade has been finished, except for the stone capping.

Benches have also been put in, and the interpretive signs for the site are completed and ready to be mounted.
