Volunteers needed for clean-up day at Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial

The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community will host a “Service and Community” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.

Volunteers will gather to do landscaping maintenance and improvements at the National Historic Site, located at Pritchard Park, 4192 Eagle Harbor Drive.

The effort was planned to coincide with the 77th anniversary of the signing of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066, which prompted the removal of Japanese American families from Bainbridge Island at the start of World War II, and the ensuing and unique legacy that followed of a community that welcomed their Japanese American friends and neighbors home after the end of the war. The event had been scheduled for Feb. 19 but was postponed due to snowy weather.

Organizers said the spruce-up day has generous support from the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District, and everyone is invited and welcome to pitch in and help.

Helpers should wear appropriate clothing for work and weather, bring gloves and their own gardening tools.
