Street dance to kick off Fourth of July festivities

The July Third Street Dance and BBQ will be filling the downtown street from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. the day before Independence Day. The street closure will begin restricting traffic at 4 p.m.

Winslow Way is set to be closed down once more — so the island can get footloose.

The July Third Street Dance and BBQ will be filling the downtown street from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. the day before Independence Day. The street closure will begin restricting traffic at 4 p.m.

After the downtown is transformed into a car-free zone, and dancing feet will proudly pound the island pavement.

“The July Third Street Dance is really one big party in downtown Winslow for the entire community,” said Andrea Mackin, executive director of the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association.

The dance is a community-oriented kick-off to the Fourth of July holiday.

The downtown association is keeping things simple this year. There will be no carnival-like events, just a good old-fashioned community gathering and celebration.

“We are keeping it simple,” Mackin said. “The focus is on providing an evening of food, music, sidewalk chalk, and a chance to see friends you don’t see much the rest of the year.”

The event was cancelled last year due to lack of funding and construction along Winslow Way. It was the first cancelation of the dance in its 25-year history.

This year’s dance was also not certain until sponsors such as Columbia Bank, Harrison Medical Center and the Bainbridge Island Review stepped up to make sure that the show would go on.

Food, beer and wine will be available for cash only. Kids Discovery Museum will provide chalk for kids to use on the downtown sidewalks.

A beer garden will be set up and stocked by the recently established Bainbridge Brewing Company.

Food will be provided by BI BBQ, Casa Rojas Express and Viking Fest Ice Cream.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Mike Sharp and the Lubricators starting at 6 p.m. Mutha Knows Best will take over at 7:45 p.m., kicking out the jams with funk and R&B. And DJ Zee will keep the music and the dancing going until the end of the dance at 11 p.m.
