It was another dominant performance by Dayton Gilbreath on Friday night.

The junior rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns as Bainbridge dominated Seattle Prep 35-13 at West Seattle Stadium.

Dayton ran for all three of his touchdowns in the first half, scoring on runs of four, 37 and six yards.

It’s his second straight multi-touchdown game and his fourth 100-yard game of the season.

“They’re taking care of business,” head coach Andy Grimm said. “Defensively, our kids played a great game. They executed well, they had five turnovers and we had great pressure from our front four.”

The Spartans picked off Seattle Prep quarterback Drew Turner four times – Kauika Peleti, Dane Hiett, Dayton Gilbreath and Nick Stone all had one – and sacked him five times.

Dayton Gilbreath had two, while Bryan Gilbreath, Gabe Culkin and Gary French had one apiece.

Turner came into the game with 12 touchdown passes against just one interception.

“They came out and set a tone,” Grimm said. “They played very physically.”

They also took care of the ball, as no one fumbled the ball and quarterback Quinton Agosta did not have an interception.

He was 6 of 10 for 84 yards and one touchdown, a 26-yard pass to Hiett.

Ross Cobb ran one in from 18 yards out to open the scoring.

With the Spartans in second place, they can guarantee their entry to the playoffs with a win over Bishop Blanchet tomorrow.

That would place them against the second place Sound Division team, currently Nathan Hale, in the crossover game next week.

If they lose, it forces them into a tiebreaking mini-playoff come Monday against Blanchet and Eastside Catholic for the last two spots.

“We knew no matter what that this Blanchet game was going to be big,” Grimm said. “This is where we want to be at the end of the season.”

Dayton Gilbreath said they’ll be ready.

“We’re connecting really well, especially on defense,” he said. “(The short week) isn’t a big deal. We’ll come together.”

Game time is at 7 p.m.

Kickers take out Blanchet

The Bainbridge girls soccer team got back to business by defeating Bishop Blanchet 2-1 on the road last Friday.

The Braves got on the scoreboard first when Madeline Steiner scored on an assist from Maddy Mercier in the 28th minute.

But the Spartans came back in the second half, as Lucy Donahue scored on an assist from Ashley Waplinger in the 60th minute.

Ten minutes later, it was Hannah Oshin with the winning goal on an assist from Waplinger.

“It was the type of game we needed to get the monkey off our back,” head coach Anh Tran said. “We have felt like we have not played very well in the second half against our opponents this year and we were going to change that.”

Tran said they’ve had to change their offensive philosophy with Maureen Callahan and Zena Hemmen out, but they’ll be ready for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs.

“Defensively, I think we can match up to any forwards out there,” he said.

Bainbridge played Eastside Catholic yesterday. They travel to Holy Names on Thursday.

Harriers do well at Invite

At the Fort Worden Invitational in Port Townsend last Saturday, Spartan cross-country runner Bevan Taylor set a course record with his first place time of 16:18.

Max Welch ran a time of 17:14, while Taylor Lea ran a time of 17:40.

The boys team finished in fourth place, four points away from taking third.

For the girls, Emily Farrar finished second overall with a time of 20:20.

Callie McKenzie finished in sixth place with a time of 20:37.

The Spartan girls finished in fourth place as a team.
