Needing a win to move into the semifinals, the Bainbridge volleyball team is staring down elimination instead.

The Spartans lost in five games to Mercer Island by the scores of 25-12, 17-25, 21-25, 25-15 and 6-15.

The loss relegates them to the consolation bracket.

“We played really well and not well,” head coach Julie Miller said. “It was a very up and down match. The two games we won we dominated, but the ones we lost, we just fell apart.”

Hannah Stuart had 12 kills, 15 digs, six aces and three blocks, while Kelcey Dunaway had 15 kills, three blocks and seven digs.

Marijke Schwarz-Smith had 11 kills and two blocks, while Lindsey Bratonia had 19 digs.

Ally Post finished with 33 assists and 14 digs.

Bainbridge plays Newport today in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. at Liberty High.

Kickers sent home by Prep

The Bainbridge girls soccer team couldn’t overcome a tough Seattle Prep squad, losing 3-0 to the Panthers Monday at the Southwest Complex in Seattle.

Annika Hansen scored in the 13th minute, then Pfeiffer Bloecker scored with an assist from Laura Hagen in the 49th minute and again in the 66th minute.

It was their fourth loss in the last five games.

“Seattle Prep is a very good team,” head coach Anh Tran said. “They have very fast forwards that know how to finish.

“At times we looked very good,” he continued. “We moved the ball around the field and had the first shot, but for most of the game, Prep dominated us.”

One positive that Tran can take from the game is that he got everyone playing time.

“The younger players got a great opportunity to play against the state’s best team,” he said. “They now know what it feels like and hopefully we can use the experience to build on for next year.”

The Spartans lose ten players to graduation this year, including starters Caitlyn Salo, Lindsey Montoya, Maureen Callahan and Zena Hemmen.

Bainbridge finished with a record of 9-7-1.
