Bainbridge Island Republican James M. Olsen has announced he is running for the 23rd District’s Position 2 seat in the state House of Representatives.

Olsen, 62, announced his candidacy Monday in an email to his fellow Republicans, friends and the media.

“I will run a respectful but aggressive campaign dealing with the Democrat agenda that we have seen for years unending.  Change is coming and it will not involve more Democrat hegemony here in the 23rd and Kitsap,” he wrote.

Olsen will square off against incumbent Democrat Drew Hansen, 39.

In his announcement, Olsen vowed to reform the state’s approach to the budget, and said the budget passed during the recent session “used felonious budget gimmicks to reach mission accomplished.”

It’s not his first run at elected office.

Olsen ran against Christine Rolfes for Position 2 in the State House in November 2010 and lost by approximately 8,500 votes.

Rolfes garnered 57 percent of the vote in her campaign for a third term; Olsen won 42 percent.

Olsen has been contemplating another run for a 23rd District seat for some time.

According to the Public Disclosure Commission, the state’s watchdog on campaign financing, Olsen registered as a candidate in June 2011.

Hansen, also a Bainbridge Island resident, registered as a candidate in October.

Olsen has not yet reported any contributions to his campaign.

According to records on file with the Public Disclosure Commission, Hansen has already raised $109,779 for his 2012 race. He has spent $6,287.
