Crash claims island man

Alcohol and high speed are believed to be factors in the death of a 47-year-old Bainbridge man killed in a one-car accident east of Winslow early Sunday.

The victim was identified as Larry E. McMullen of Manitou Beach Drive.

The accident was reported at 3:01 a.m. Sunday on Grand Avenue near Yeomalt Point Drive.

Police say McMullen was behind the wheel of a 1988 Porsche 928, and failed to negotiate a curve from Park Avenue onto Grand, just north of Yeomalt Point.

The vehicle left the roadway, went down an embankment and struck two large trees.

McMullen was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene from multiple injuries.

Just before the accident, two neighbors heard a vehicle traveling at “an extremely high rate of speed” on the roadway, police said. Alcohol was also believed to be a factor in the crash, according to officers at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.

Teacher pleads guilty to porn

A former Bainbridge High School teacher pleaded guilty Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court to possession of child pornography.

Charles Patrick Murphy, 47, was sentenced to three months in jail by Superior Court Judge Ann M. Laurie after pleading guilty on three separate counts of “possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” said Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Justin Zaug.

Zaug said Murphy might be able to serve his sentence in the form of house arrest or work release, though that decision is at the discretion of the jail.

He also received 12 months probation and must register as a sex offender.

Murphy was arrested last January by Bainbridge Police after numerous images and videos of unclothed boys were discovered in his High School Road home and on his classroom computer at Bainbridge High School.

He had taught science at the school for several years, and was fired by the district while he awaited trial.

In July, Murphy violated his bail by leaving the jurisdiction, but was arrested just two hours after Bainbridge Police asked for help in locating him.

His whereabouts were reported by a citizen who spotted his car at a Renton address.
