Nakata Pool closed due to faulty caulking product

The Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District announced this week it has closed the Nakata Pool at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center due to issues with recent repairs to the liner.

The primary concern, officials said, is the failure of the caulking product used by the contractor — “due to product failure, improper application, or both” — which resulted in a sticky residue attaching to swimmers and their apparel, as well as peeling in areas of the pool coating.

The district is in the process of removing the product, and currently all programs slated to take place in the pool have been cancelled, or are taking place in the Ray Williamson Pool on a modified schedule.

Participants in any cancelled programming have reportedly been contacted by phone or email and will receive a full refund.

Bainbridge Island Swim & Diving Club practices have been reorganized into the Ray Williamson Pool schedule; see team websites for more information.

Monthly pass holders will receive extensions or refunds.

The Nakata Pool will remain closed pending assessment and repair. There is currently no estimate as to how long the work will take.

The Ray Williamson Pool will remain open with a modified schedule. The sauna, steamroom and spa will remain open with normal hours. Updates on both pools will be posted at www.biaquatics.org.
