A Bainbridge Island man was taken to the hospital with minor burns after he rushed inside his burning home Sunday morning to look for the family’s dog.

The two-alarm blaze on Sivertson Road NE was reported just after 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 after one of the homeowners called 911.

The single-story home was a total loss.

Only two people were inside the home at the time of the fire. Bainbridge Island Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter said the homeowners had turned on a gas-powered generator after the power went out early Sunday morning, then heard an explosion in the basement.

Fire officials weren’t sure what exactly exploded. Fuel cans and other combustibles were in the basement, and there were multiple secondary explosions.

Firefighters found the home fully engulfed when they arrived. Flames were shooting through the roof.

The home was a total loss.

The first unit on the scene came from North Kitsap. Bainbridge units could not respond immediately from Bainbridge’s Phelps Road station because the facility is not staffed around the clock.

Poulsbo firefighters also responded to the fire.

No firefighters were injured in the blaze.

The woman occupant of the home was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
