Hood Canal Bridge closures begin

The Hood Canal Bridge will be closed overnight May 14 and 16-18 for work.

It will close at 10 p.m. Saturday and open back up at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Monday through Wednesday it will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., ending May 18.

It will close to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

State Department of Transportation contractor crews will be making repairs to the system that guides both halves of the bridge together. The bridge will be separated while they work so no one can cross.

Similar schedules will take place May 20-24, June 10-14 and June 17-21, avoiding Memorial Day weekend.

A DOT news release says more work will be done June 6-8 as they will replace antiquated hardware to reduce the bridge’s carbon footprint. Sixteen light poles will be removed and 34 others upgraded with LED lights. The changes expect to save taxpayers $28,000 a year.

This is all part of a $1.6 million project that includes weatherization, HVAC upgrades and both control towers, and lighting inside the towers.
