Welsh scores 37.2 to win all-around title, takes two of four events.
On Monday, Cindy Guy, Lorry Gilbreath and the rest of the Bainbridge gymnastics team were still feeling the effects of last Friday’s meet.
Not only did they barely hold off four other teams, including a tough North Kitsap squad, they had to clean up the Commodore lower gym and haul most of their equipment – including the vaulting table – up two flights of stairs to put it back in their gym.
“It took us a solid hour (nonstop),†Guy said. “You literally could not stop for 30 seconds.â€
And the only male help they had was from Ashley Cross’ boyfriend and his friend.
“They were a godsend,†Guy said.
The two couldn’t help during the meet, but the Spartans’ depth took care of things as they squeaked by the Vikings 171.8 to 168.55 for their 82nd victory in a row. Olympia finished third with 150.55 points, while Sehome/Squalicum and Capitol rounded out the team scores.
Emily Basile said the meet was “the longest she’s ever been to, but it was awesome.â€
“It was tough, but it was fun seeing your competition,†she said. “I was surprised at how close it was, but it was good to see what we have to work with.â€
Guy did acknowledge that keeping their streak going is starting to grate on them.
“It’s a lot of pressure to keep this undefeated season (alive),†she said, noting that the loss of Kathleen Callahan to a broken hand put them down an all-around competitor. “The meet on Friday nearly wiped us out, but it’s good to have some competition.â€
Marie Welsh did her part to keep it going. The sophomore finished first in the all-around competition with a score of 37.2, her highest of the season.
She was second on the vault with an 8.9, first on the floor with a 9.5, first on the bars with a 9.6 and second on the beam with a 9.2.
Sophie Wenzlau finished third in the all-around score behind North Kitsap’s Kai Morrow with a 35.15. She tied for ninth with Katie Bale of North Kitsap on the beam, placed third on the floor, sixth on the bars and first on the beam with a 9.25.
Lauren Fleming, Annie Zuckerman and Elizabeth Annis finished ninth, 10th and 12th, respectively.
Fleming’s highest finish was fifth on the bars, while Zuckerman tied with two other gymnasts for sixth on the beam.
Annis tied with two other gymnasts for fourth on the vault.
“Marie had her highest all-around score, Sophie placed really well and everybody stepped up,†Guy said. “Liz scored really well, and in beam we placed four out of the top six, so I was real pleased with that.â€
As a team, Bainbridge scored 43.30 points on the vault, 41.75 on the bars, 44.30 on the beam and 42.25 on the floor.
The Spartans had no less than four tumblers place in the top 15 in every event, which will be crucial when the postseason rolls around.
They got a jumpstart on it yesterday when Bainbridge and Shorecrest decided to make it an exhibition meet, or a “sisters†match, which means two teammates are a pair and they will only do two events each and add it up as one all-around score.
Guy said that will keep things relaxed for the Metro League championship meet at 5 p.m. at Nathan Hale on Friday.
And Basile feels they’ll be ready to go.
“I feel like we’re going to be right there with every other team that’s trying to get to State,†she said. “It’s all up to the little tenths (of a point) now. We just have to clean things up.â€
