Gelder announces run for another term on Kitsap County Board of Commissioners

Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder will seek re-election to the District 1 position on the county board of commissioners.

Gelder made the announcement Sunday. Candidate Filing Week for the November 2020 General Election starts Monday, May 11.

“Even after our community re-opens, we’ll be feeling the economic impacts of the current COVID-19 crisis,” Gelder said in his announcement.

“And the greatest stewardship we can do with limited resources is to ensure we make targeted investments and strengthen our community. Advocacy on the state and federal levels will be key to our success,” he added.

Gelder had been a county commissioner since 2011 and is a member of the Democratic Party.

He said his accomplishments include the Kitsap Forest & Bay Campaign, which added more than 4,000 acres into public open space; the finalization of a complete streets study for Kingston in 2016 that has spurred $2.1 million to design and begin implementation of a long-term solution to ferry gridlock on Washington Boulevard and throughout downtown; the passage of the 1/10th of 1 percent sales-and-use tax for mental health and substance abuse; leading efforts to ensure responsible budgeting on an annual basis to support county services while maintaining reserves; and chairing the group of public officials that has stewarded the Connecting Washington funding for safety and congestion improvements along the Highway 305 corridor between Poulsbo and Winslow.
