Forum focuses on banning puppy mill sales

Kitsap Aware, a forum series on Justice and Citizenship, will present “Adopt, Don’t Shop: The Movement to Ban Puppy Mill Sales” as its next program in the free series.

The forum is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 4 at Suquamish United Church of Christ.

Organizers of the forum said puppy mill operations can have far-reaching and devastating consequences, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has documented links between commercial dog-breeding facilities and disease outbreaks. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been “woefully negligent,” forum officials said, in inspecting facilities and enforcing the Federal Animal Welfare Act, and the current administration is actively encouraging inspectors to overlook violations.

The forum will explore what is being done locally and at the state and national levels to enact laws that protect animals and people.

The series is sponsored by North Kitsap Indivisible, Resisterhood360, Free Range Films, Bainbridge Island Indivisible, and the Kitsap Progressive Action Network.

Suquamish United Church of Christ is located at 18732 Division Ave. NE, Suquamish.
