Flier gets unique view of Seafair

Navy Lt. Schuyler Boone grew up on the shores of Bainbridge Island, but his heart was always in the sky.

After leaving the island to serve in the Navy, Boone had the honor of flying twice over this year’s Seafair — as a pilot over Elliot Bay, and as a co-pilot over Lake Washington. One flight was in a specially painted P-3C Orion over Lake Washington during the Seafair Airshow on Friday, Aug. 3.  He also did two flybys in another P-3C Orion over the Parade of Ships in Elliot Bay during Seafair.

Boone graduated from Bainbridge High School in 2004. He then went to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and graduated in 2008.

But airplanes were a passion long before his time in the service.

His father was an airline pilot, and his mother, a flight attendant.

“It was never forced upon me, but I’ve always loved it,” Boone said. “I played with airplanes as a little boy. I always gravitated to it.”

When given the opportunity to fly for the Navy, it was a dream come true.

“I have a strong desire to wear the uniform and serve this country,” Boone said. “So now that I can do those two things at the same time, I consider myself blessed.”

As a Puget Sound native he grew up going to Seafair, so to be able to fly for the event was a thrill.

“The whole extravaganza of Seafair is a Northwest classic,” Boone said. “To fly over and see everyone watching, it was a once in a lifetime experience, really.”
