Two park benches were destroyed at Fort Ward Park after someone broke them down to use as firewood.

An early morning dog walker noticed the benches missing on Wednesday, July 24. Soon, she found the remnants of the benches at a small campsite commonly used by kayakers.

The dog walker noticed the metal plaques that once adorned the benches and pulled them out of the fire pit. The plaques told the story of the benches, which were local Eagle Scout projects that were donated to the park.

Bainbridge police were called, who then notified the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District about the incident.

Mike Mejia with the parks district told officers that it was just the latest in a string of vandalism incidents at island parks recently, according to the police report on the case.
