Council says no to second bridge

"No bridge, thanks.By a 7-0 vote, the Bainbridge Island City Council this week formally opposed the idea of a second span connecting the island to the Kitsap Peninsula.I'm sure from Illahee west, it has its merits, said Councilman Jim Llewellyn, who co-sponsored the resolution with Councilwoman Christine Nasser. From Point White east, it has none."

“No bridge, thanks.By a 7-0 vote, the Bainbridge Island City Council this week formally opposed the idea of a second span connecting the island to the Kitsap Peninsula.I’m sure from Illahee west, it has its merits, said Councilman Jim Llewellyn, who co-sponsored the resolution with Councilwoman Christine Nasser. From Point White east, it has none. The virtues of a second bridge, between Illahee and Crysal Springs, has been touted over the past year by a North Kitsap-based citizen group variously known as West Sound Connections and LINKS.Mayor Dwight Sutton devoted an hour to discuss the idea with LINKS representatives a month ago, and a recent report to the council on that meeting inspired a round of chuckles in the chamber. It also inspired Wednesday’s resolution, which states that such a project force the relocation of hundreds of residents in the way of the bridge and a cross-island throughway, damage the environment, and cause the industrial development of Blakely Harbor Park. The island already accepts a disproportionate share of cross-sound traffic, the resolution states. They asked us for our opinion, Nasser said Friday. We didn’t want them to come to a council meeting and make a presentation, because we didn’t want to give them any legitimacy… (But) in this case, it didn’t seem like ignoring (the idea) would make it would go away.Nasser said she has been called by numerous constituents concerned about the proposal. Most recently, bridge backers have suggested floating a countywide advisory ballot this fall, to gauge the idea’s support around the Kitsap area. If you evaluate it seriously, and the likelihood of the outcome, (a vote) is kind of a waste of money, Llewellyn said. I’m not sure, if I was them, I’d want to waste that kind of money.Llewellyn said his discussions with island residents suggest a certain local consensus.Everybody I talk to either says ‘no,’ or ‘hell, no,’ he said.”
