City to host tour of historic Suyematsu Farm

The city of Bainbridge Island and Friends of the Farms is inviting interested islanders to attend a guided community tour of the historic Suyematsu Farmstead from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Suyematsu Farmstead is a 5-acre portion of the city-owned Suyematsu-Bentryn Family Farm property on Day Road, which was designated as a historic area in 2016.

Friends of the Farms is currently leading the initial phase of a project that is looking at preservation and interpretation options, repairs and improvements, agricultural uses, and the creation of additional features to sustain and enhance the public value of the property.

The Bainbridge-based nonprofit’s work includes developing an implementation plan, officials said, that outlines proposed activity, management structures, funding issues, and operational costs as well as capital needs and design concepts. The plan will guide subsequent fundraising and construction work.

Community members attending are encouraged to park at the Suyematsu Farmstand, 9227 Day Road East. Questions regarding the tour on can be sent to city spokeswoman Kellie Stickney at kstickney@bainbridgewa.gov or 206-780-3741.
