Celebration planned for Bainbridge’s new dock

Bainbridge Island will host a grand opening for the city’s new Waterfront Park dock on Saturday, June 2.

Though the dock has been in use by the public for some time now, city officials wanted to plan the celebration for when the weather would be more cooperative.

The grand opening is now scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at the dock. There will be live music, free ice cream, and pirate fun for the kids.

Work on the project wrapped up earlier this year. The new dock is almost 900 feet long, which city officials note is more than twice the length and width of the old dock, which was built in 1986.

The new dock greatly expands moorage for visiting boats, according to the city, and increases the area for launching and retrieving trailered boats. The boat launch ramp has been extended to allow trailered boats to launch at lower tides.

Features of the new dock include all-aluminum framing with non-slip decking, improved lighting, potable water and electrical connections, new sewage disposal facilities, and a concession float that will offer paddleboard and kayak rentals. A lower, side-dock gives easy access for hand-powered watercraft.

The total cost of the new dock, including design, is $2.37 million.
