Dogs bite
After some dog bite incidents downtown, the city of Bainbridge Island has put up signs reminding people to keep their dogs on a leash.
Signs were put up at Town Square, Winslow and Madison, Winslow and Bjune, Bjune at the playground, Foot Bridge to Waterfront Park, Waterfront Park restrooms and Ericksen Park and Wallace.
Help B&G Club
A dog fashion show, raffle and DJ are part of an event being put on the Boys and Girls Club of Bainbridge Island as a fundraiser.
Dog models are being sought in three categories: Country Canines, Haute Dogue Coutre and Best in Birthday Suit. Call Jacob Freimark at 206-384-8316.
The event will be June 10 from noon to 3 p.m. DJ Bronco Bob will play music from 4-6 p.m.
Admission is $10 or $25 for a family at The Ravine and Apothecary Tea Shop in Winslow.
$50K grant
Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network has been granted $50,000 by the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island – joining 34 nonprofits to benefit from Rotary’s 2022 Auction & Rummage sale.
BARN plans to use the funds to help buy nearly two acres – known as Grandma’s Christmas Tree Farm – at 8840 Three Tree Lane, just south of BARN’s facility off New Brooklyn Road. BARN needs to raise $1.55 million for the purchase. Almost $1 million has been raised. Specifically how the land would be used is still being considered.
Right now, BARN has 10 fully equipped studios for makers and creators – including many small businesses and youth – dedicated to the arts and sciences of woodworking, electronics, metal, cooking, fiber, glass, jewelry, fine metals, printing, and writing.
Rotary is awarding $170,000 to BI and Kitsap County groups that work in health and human services; arts, culture and humanities; recreation and enrichment; education; environmental work; and animal welfare. The event brought in more than $725,000. This year’s event is July 8.
Plastic garden
A Blakely Elementary class made an underwater garden landscape made out of recycled plastic that was on display at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts.
The third-graders just learned about the trash island in the Pacific Ocean. Thanks to the art piece, the class motivated the food and nutrition coordinator of the BI school to cut down on kitchen plastic waste by almost 80%.
The class is petitioning for those same measures to be taken in all BISD schools.
Vote BI Reads
The city of Bainbridge Island announces the next three BI Reads book choice options to read and attend events August-November.
Vote on your favorite by June 16.
The choices are: “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants” by Robin Wall Kimmerer; “The House of Broken Angels” by Luis Alberto Urrea; and “A Tale of the Time Being” by Ruth Ozeki.

Trail cleanup
Be part of the mix – the trail mix— and Celebrate Bainbridge Island trails on National Trails Day June 3.
While you’re out, pick up the newly updated “Trails on Bainbridge Island” map at Hilltop (Grand Forest) and lower Fort Ward Park from 10 a.m. to noon, hosted by the BI Parks & Trails Foundation.
The large-format color map includes BI’s 48 miles of public trails, as well as nearby dining, services and other amenities. Learn more about the foundation’s work to expand and enhance the island trail network. The foundation will also hand out its trail mix. Information: www.biparksfoundation.org
Local marine
Connor Gregoire of Bainbridge Island graduated from the Basic School at US Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA May 19.
A 2018 graduate of O’Dea High School in Seattle, Gregoire will continue his training in his first choice of military occupational specialty, as an infantry officer. Gregoire was commissioned as a second lieutenant last August upon completion of Officer Candidate School.
Gregoire attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT where he played football and lacrosse and graduated last May with a degree in Government, International Relations.
