Spirit Week

Blakely Elementary School in Bainbridge Island is not going to let COVID-19 restrictions and at-home learning get it done.

The school’s PTO is still planning Spirit Week for Dec. 14-18.

While kids won’t be able to go to school in their fun outfits, they will be able to show their friends via ZOOM.

Monday is Pajama Day, while Tuesday is Crazy Hair Day. All Wellness Wednesday students will reflect, draw, journal or write to friends/family.

Thursday is Favorite Color Day and Friday the school will end the week with Bulldog Pride Day, when students will wear blue or their Bulldog gear to show school spirit.

Middle school sports

Due to the challenges and health risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the West Sound Middle School Sports League has decided to cancel its sports seasons for the 2020-21 school year.

Woodward Middle School on Bainbridge Island participates in that league for cross country, track, boys and girls basketball, and girls volleyball.

League officials say they recognize sports are important to the overall health of students and their schools will do their best to offer extracurricular activities safely at their local levels.

Woodward athletic director Jim Corsetti says in a newsletter to parents that it hopes to offer workouts and practices following coronavirus safety precautions in these sports.

Plan withdrawn

Aveteera has reportedly withdrawn its application for build a compost facility at the Triangle Property on Bainbridge Island.

The property is located at the intersection of Fletcher Bay Road and Lynwood Center Road.

Neighbors had complained to the City Council previously about potential smells, noise and traffic problems.

The application was withdrawn prior to a council meeting where the board was expected to reject the proposal.

Bloedel drive

Bloedel Reserve is having a canned food drive to help families in need this winter.

Through Jan. 3, 2021, Bloedel is partnering with YWCA Kitsap County accepting such donations at a collection bin by the gatehouse. Visitors can also hang a wish for the coming year on the Community Wishing Tree.

Customers who walk the trails can see wooden snow people and herds of deer, all handcrafted by staff.

Masks are required due to COVID-19 and tickets are limited to five per group.
