BIPD vehicle struck as theft suspects flee

A Bainbridge Island Police Department vehicle was struck while a suspect fled Aug. 14.

Police responded to a report of a theft in progress at 8:28 a.m. that Sunday in the 11000 block of Olallie Lane.

The suspects were operating two vehicles—a white Toyota Tacoma and an older model van—when they left the scene.

An officer encountered the vehicles at Arrow Point Drive at Miller Road. The suspect vehicles stopped briefly then drove to the left side of the road to escape. The Tacoma struck the passenger side of the marked police vehicle.

The Tacoma was found abandoned on Hart Lane. Officers searched for the driver without success. A trailer the Tacoma had been towing during the theft had been abandoned. The van was later recovered on High School Loop. Both vehicles were reported stolen.

A red 1994 Ford F-250 was reported stolen from High School Loop and is possibly related to this incident.

The officer was not injured.
