Big check goes to Bainbridge schools

A generous group numbering 524 donors have emptied their pockets on behalf of the island’s schools, contributing $158,000 to the Bainbridge Schools Foundation’s fall fundraiser.

“We’re overjoyed that we reached our goal and want to thank the community for supporting our local schools,” said Mairead Shutt, the foundation’s executive director. “Our state does not fully fund K-12 education, and we rely on the generosity of our island community to help us fill the gap and continue the tradition of excellence in our schools.”

Funds will pay for the Teacher Support Initiative, to help recruit and retain great teachers; professional development for instructors; academic support for all students, and innovative programs like the Design and Engineering Program, which impacts all elementary students.

Shutt wanted to especially thank Dr. Elizabeth Bell and Dr. Nicholas Thompson of Bainbridge Dental for their $20,000 matching fund donation, as well as Mora Iced Creamery for its support.
