Hundreds of Bainbridge High School students walked out of class at 10 a.m. Wednesday as part of a day of national protest for improved school security.

The walkout was planned to last 17 minutes, in honor of the 17 people who died a month ago in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Bainbridge students gathered near the flagpole at the entrance to the BHS campus and then staged a die-in, where most of they lay motionless for roughly 10 minutes.

Security was bolstered at the school for the protest, with a Bainbridge police officer joining school officials in keeping a buffer zone around the students — marked by a long stretch of yellow “CAUTION” tape — clear of onlookers.

Officials with the Bainbridge Island School District, and student organizers, had asked parents and others to steer clear of the event, but the walkout still attracted more than two dozen parents and other observers to the sidewalks in front of the school.

One person held a sign that said “We’re Proud Of You,” and the crowd of onlookers burst into loud applause at the end of the protest as students shared quick hugs or posed for pictures.

BHS students were given the option of staying in class during the walkout, but it was not immediately clear how many actually did.
